110,000 SURE-P Employees Face Sack
1:49:09 AM
The Subsidy Re-Investment Empowerment Programme (SURE-P) will disengage 110,000 youths it employed under its empowerment programme as from next month, Chairman of the Committee Dr. Christopher Kolade has said.

Speaking when he appeared before the Senate adhoc committee on SURE-P led by Senator Abdul Ningi yesterday in Abuja, Kolade said his committee would not be able to continue to pay the beneficiaries of the programme N10, 000 monthly as a result of paucity of funds.

Under the programme, 3000 youths were engaged from each of the 36 States of the Federation and the FCT but regretted that the committee had initially estimated the sum of N27 billion but the National Assembly only appropriated N9 billion which he said was grossly inadequate.

Kolade said that the committee received the sum of N180 billion last year and about N105 billion this year from the N15 billion monthly accrual to the committee and pays about N13 billion to the employees every month.

ASUU, FG Reach New Deal To End Strike
Friday, September 20, 2013 1:17 PM
The Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) struck a new deal last night.

This happened at a three-hour close-door meeting at the State House in Abuja between Vice President Mohammed Namadi Sambo and the leadership of the union.

Speaking to State House correspondents after the meeting, ASUU President Nasir Isa Fagge said the union had got a message from the government and would meet its members "and get back to the government".

Fagge, however, refused to dis-close the details of the new "message".
On whether there is a possibility of calling off the strike soon, he said "as a good messenger", he would only report back to "the larger ASUU".

Also speaking, Supervising Minister of Education Nyesom Wike, who was at the meeting, assured that the strike would soon end as the government was ready to resolve all the issues that led to the industrial action.

Also at the meeting were the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Com-mission (NUC), Professor Julius Okojie, as well as Vice Chancellor of the Bayero University Kano, Professor Abdulrasheed Abubakar, and his counterparts Isaac Adewole of the University of Ibadan and Hamisu Muhammed of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi.
Former ASUU presidents Dr Dipo Fasina and Dr Abdullahi Sule-Kano were also in attendance.

Nigeria to Send More TAC Volunteers to Rwanda
Friday, September 20, 2013 1:12 PM
The Nigerian government is to deploy more volunteers of the Technical Aid Corps (TAC) to Rwanda, following a request by the government of that country.

TAC Director General Dr Pius Osunyikanmi disclosed this yesterday when he received the Ambassador of Rwanda to Nigeria, Mr Joseph Habineza, in his office in Abuja.

Osunyikanmi said more than 40 volunteers in the health sector are already serving in Rwanda, while attesting to the good behaviour and brilliant service delivery of volunteers deployed to Rwanda.

"We have well over 40 volunteers in the health sector in Rwanda and let me place on record that they have been worthy ambassadors of Nigeria in Kigali especially in terms of their disposition, spirit of hard work and enterprise. It is this spirit of hard work that has endeared Kigali to Nigeria to the extent that this cooperation is being asked to be deepened today," he said.
Osunyikanmi said the visit of the envoy to his office had assisted in extending the frontier of discussions in boosting cooperation between both countries. He assured that in line with the transformation agenda of the federal government, Nigeria is willing to boost cooperation with  African countries, the Carribean and the Pacific. Habineza congratulated Osunyikanmi on his appointment as TAC DG and thanked him for obliging the requests of his country for more volunteers. He said the areas of priority include education, ICT and health.

"In Rwanda we used to speak French only, but from 1994 we included English as our third official language. In 2006 we changed from teaching in French to teaching in English, now English is the official teaching language. With the development, we have the challenge to change from one language to another, so we need Nigerians who really speak and teach English to come and teach our teachers", he said.
