Job Descriptions

  • The Africa Rice Center (AfricaRice) is seeking four (4) highly qualified Research Associates in Agribusiness Development be based at each of the four selected staple crop processing zones (SCPZ) in Nigeria.
  • The Agribusiness Development Research Associates will be under the supervision of the Rice Commodity Specialist.
  • He/she will lead and drive the technical aspects of the ATASP-1 project in project implementation SCPZs in Nigeria in close collaboration with other project staff.
  • He/she is responsible for all field based operations and processes targeted at achieving ATASP-1 project objectives to improve rice productivity and income at farm level. Each of the successful candidates will be posted at any of the 4 SCPZs with frequent travel to the project communities.
Responsibilities

Develop and coordinate market development strategy and interventions in the rice sector:

  • Support the design of rice sectors market development strategy within the context of ATASP-1 executed in Nigeria.
  • Plan and implement rice market development interventions in rice seed systems development, rice inputs and output market sub-sectors.
  • Organize capacity building for stakeholders (NARIs staff, extension agents, producers' groups, seed companies, etc.) on rice sector market/ value chain development.
Support the establishment and strengthen market linkages in rice value chain:
  • Support marketing activities for rice value chain actors in rice sectors development hubs in Nigeria.
  • Support establishment of contracts with potential partners (e.g. market actors), develop concrete offers for partnership and negotiate agreements between key actors.
  • Initiate contract farming arrangement between seed companies and seed out growers and for farmers groups and paddy off-takers based on best practices and trust.
  • Organize and implement market exposure visits for rice farmers and processors for learning and awareness creation purposes.
  • Actively participate in monitoring and evaluation of project implementation
Facilitate the adoption and use of GAP in rice farmers' fields:
  • Promote adoption and use of GAP and knowledge to improve rice management and their step-wise integration into farmers' practices.
  • Coordinate the formation and animation of rice producers' learning groups that constitutes the nucleus of GAP learning and dissemination at farm level.
  • Promote participatory extension methods and group-based learning tools that encourage knowledge and experience sharing amongst farmers.
  • Demonstrate new technologies and practices to increase crop yields at farm level.
  • Promote the use of audio-visual and other multi-media tools for the dissemination of GAP and technologies that increase rice yields in farmers' fields.
  • Assist farmer leaders to develop a critical capacity to observe, analyze, and to propose appropriate solutions to crop management problems challenges.
Supervision and Reporting:
  • Supervise and support field based staff including community based facilitators and farmers implementing field activities in rice sector development hubs.
  • Supervise in conjunction with other project staff as may be required, annual field surveys on the agronomic, socio-economic and livelihoods aspects of rice farming, including data analysis and reporting.
  • Write monthly, quarterly summaries and annual reports to the rice commodity specialist or senior management as maybe required for purposes of program documentation, M&E and reporting to donors.
  • Plan and carry out annual yield sampling and similar key performance indicators (KPI) at farm level.
  • Contribute to project quarterly and annual planning meetings and budgeting process by furnishing timely information on the agronomic aspect of crop cultivation.
  • Provide feedback and manage information to/from stakeholders (farmer organization, private sector value chain actors, etc) as maybe advised by project management from time to time to ensure adequate communications linkages are maintained between the project management team, the communities and other stakeholders.
Key Qualifications 
Minimum Academic/ Professional Qualifications:
  • A Master of Science Degree in Agronomy/Crop Science or a related Science, together with field-based experiences in rice sector development projects implementation.
Minimum Experience:
  • At least 5 years experience in research to development activities in Nigeria rice sector and a good knowledge of rice growing ecologies and rice producing communities in Nigeria with proven farmers capacity building, technology and innovation dissemination qualities.
Key Competencies
Abilities:
  • Must have previous experience in market development and be willing to spend long periods travelling and staying in rural areas.
  • Must have experience with community-based projects implementation and/or small-holder-oriented development initiatives are desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to carry out ToT capacity building and farmers groups trainings.
Skills
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills, including presentations
  • Computer literacy with proficient knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint applications
  • Proficiency in English language with excellent communication skills. Fluent in Hausa, Yoruba or Igbo will be an added advantage.
Team Orientation
Shows commitment to teamwork with minimal supervision by working positively and cooperatively with others. Committed to a high standard of performance, a sense of urgency and mutual respect and integrity

Knowledge
Thorough knowledge of rice Agronomy, rice growing environments and particular experience within Nigeria is important.

  • To successfully implement Marie Stopes International Organization Nigeria (MSION) Social Franchise (SF) strategies of partnering with selected private health providers in providing comprehensive reproductive health care services to the underserved population in Nigeria, there is need to develop and ensure high standard and quality of service provision through a competency-based training of team members and provider partners.
  • MSN is a result oriented non-profit, social marketing organization that is positioned to achieving high quality, measurable outcomes, rather than focusing on inputs or processes. Quality standards are of paramount importance to the organisation in all her service delivery channels.
  • The government of Nigeria through the Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH) has clearly defined modalities for certifying provider's competence for FP service provision.
  • MSN as a partner with FMoH is committed to maintaining agreed quality standards and technical assistance in the provision of FP/RH services.
  • PPIUD has been seen as a veritable and strategic intervention aimed which ensures that adequate contraceptive cover is provided for women within 24 hours after delivery.
  • In most countries, this has reduced the number of women who return to clinic few months post-partum with pregnancy
Job Description
  • The training consultants will work in close collaboration with MSI Consultants to provide the training together as well as to ensure quality standards are followed as per FMoH/MSN protocol.
  • Participate and co-facilitate a 5 days PPIUD training(Theory and Humanistic model and practicum
  • Sensitized all consultants within the Obs and Gyno department on the planned PPIUD and expectations in terms of clients
  • Pre-book and sensitize ANC clients in the 4 units within the department refer same for PPIUD service
  • Adapt training module in accordance with National/ MSI PPIUD FP training module and protocol (MSI Consultant provide MSI PPIUD module)
  • Liaise with the MSI Consultant & MSN clinical trainers to assess the qualification and experience of invited trainees and proactively adapt training materials to effectively meet their individual and collective needs.
  • Ensure that participants understand contraindications, indications and side-effects of the PPIUD as a method of family planning.
  • Implement supportive supervision to providers shortly after training and schedule frequent monitoring of services.
  • Provide referrals/linkage for women to the health facility for antenatal counseling, and especially or reaffirming an ANC choice when the woman is in labor, as well as pre-discharge
  • Co -supervise the participants at all times while they perform PPIUCD insertions.
  • Evaluate the performance of each participant using the appropriate PPIUCD Clinical Skills checklist
  • Monitor the procedure of insertions on clients and ensure each trainee conducts at least 5 PPIUD insertion before certification
  • Serve as a point for referral in case of any complication or emergencies.
Deliverables
The output for this assignment includes the following:
  • List of providers trained
  • List of providers certified with number of insertions performed
  • Pre and post test analysis report
  • Comprehensive technical report (hard and e-copy) of the training processes(including lessons learnt, issues/observations, next steps

Program/Department Summary

  • Mercy Corps has been present in Nigeria since 2012, focusing its interventions on women's empowerment, economic development and conflict mitigation. With the insurgency spilling over from the north east of Nigeria and causing displacement of over a million individual, Mercy Corps is addressing the rising humanitarian needs among displaced households and vulnerable host communities through program interventions in the Northeast. With current funding from OFDA, FFP, CERF and ECHO and ongoing opportunities from other donors, all Mercy Corps interventions in the Northeast are implemented with plans for scale-up.
  • The current funding opportunity's goal in Gombe is to support economic opportunities, food security and protection among conflict-affected populations, and to strengthen the capacity of humanitarian agencies and the quality of information gathering in Nigeria. The current funding opportunity's goal in Adamawa is to provide a package of relief interventions designed to help conflict affected communities in central Adamawa meet their basic needs in livelihoods restoration, water and sanitation and protection. Expansion into other affected states is also planned for the humanitarian response team.
General Position Summary
  • The Watsan Officer is responsible for both the soft and hardware components of the water and sanitation infrastructure activities of the ECHO program in targeted implementation area.
  • The Watsan officer will assist in supervision of the all works related to implementing infrastructure improvement; and provide input on monitoring and evaluation of the project.
Essential Job Functions
  • Under the guidance of Watsan consultant, provide input into design and conduct water and sanitation infrastructure improvement in targeted areas.
  • Supervise the planning and performance of monitoring of water and sanitation projects.
  • Ensure and promote appropriate health messages related to water, sanitation and hygiene behaviors in targeted communities
  • Promote community involvement and ownership in all water and sanitation activities and infrastructure projects and assist with hand-over activities
  • Perform final inspection of completed water and sanitation infrastructure projects, and ensure that technical, safety and environmental standards have been met.
  • Conduct regular monitoring to the water and sanitation infrastructure project conducted by contractor.
  • Conduct regular quality control visit to monitor the quality of water and sanitation infrastructure project.
  • Provide regular capacity building to Community Water Groups on water and sanitation issues
  • Prepare project designs, estimates and drawings as required, including a list of materials & labor, technical specifications needed, contract documents and project implementation plans.
  • Based on the complexity of design or magnitude of the project, decide if the project should be managed by a qualified contractor or through a community managed process.
  • Provide training to the program teams for the preparation of construction supervision check list or each engineering design.

  • Assist the procurement manager by providing all technical specifications needed for preparing tenders, in addition to assisting the procurement team by reviewing the technical profiles from contractors.

Knowledge and Experience
  • BA/BS or Higher in Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering or other relevant background and/or relevant experience in water and sanitation that related to slum upgrading program
